Farmers who has been affected by the army worm pests has appealed the the government and the ministry of Food and Agriculture to as matter of urgency help to control the said pests.
Not long ago, it was clearly stated by the Agriculture Minister, Dr Akoto Owusu Afriyie told lawmakers in July that the worms had been defeated. Answering questions on the floor of the House, the Minister said measures employed by government since the start of the invasion had proven effective.
“The fall army worms has been defeated,” he said.
But the farmers are still complaining that the Fall army worm are still doing well and destroying their various farms. Mr. Owusu Sekyere a Farmer, at Asante Mampong, who spoke with Oheneba Boamah Bennie a host of Ene Ghana, a News analysis Programm on Top fm, said that the fall army worms are now destroying all kings of plants, like Cassava, Onion, Maize, Cocoa, and even carrot. He said the fall army worm in three days has destroyed one acre of carrot farm.
Sekyere said due to this fertilizers given to them by the government has not been able to paid, therefore they are appeling to the government to give them good pesticides to control this pests.
Fall Army worm are pests that wreak havoc on crops if left to multiply.
The caterpillars mainly attack maize crops and eat everything in an area.
Once the food supply is exhausted, the entire “army” will move to the next available food source.
Since March this year, the pests have invaded more than 125,000 hectares of farm fields leaving farmers struggling to recoup their investments.
